![]() Instead, those walking through the maze will wear 3D glasses, which Murdy explained "breaks out the color spectrum," and allow he and his team to make some objects appear closer and some further. Murdy stressed that this was the same kind of maze as the others – that the 3D label didn't mean it was a movie, where people sat down. There is also a new maze based on Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses, which is in 3D. While you will go through several locations from the film, the boiler room will figure heavily into the new Nightmare maze. Murdy explained that when they asked fans what maze they'd like to see in the future last year, Nightmare was the easy winner – which, similar to Friday, made it helpful to have a new film they could base a maze on, rather than simply repeat what had been done in the past in their previous two Nightmare mazes. Nightmare is another maze they'd done before, based on the original films. Besides Friday the 13th, other mazes this year include A Nightmare on Elm Street, based on this year's remake. They might add a closed door to a room you walk through, knowing most people will immediately eye it, sure that's where the scare is coming from… which is when the scare comes from somewhere else entirely. Murdy told us how, having done this for years, they can anticipate their audience's reaction, which allows them to be very good at purposely setting up distractions. The Friday maze is intended to take you through the entire movie and most of its major set pieces – hence you walk through Camp Crystal Lake, the Voorhees home and finally into the underground lair Jason lives in – ending in a room filled with Jason's victims. He noted that he is sometimes given all the sound designer's files, meaning he can "isolate any sound effect, any piece of dialogue, any piece of music" to add to the feeling that someone is walking through the world of the movie. Murdy explained how they back light actors, "So they're not blinded, but you are." On mazes for films like Friday the 13th, Murdy is working in close tandem with the filmmakers who made the actual movie – sometimes even reading scripts very early on in the production process. An actor who jumps out at you as Jason is often using "What looks like a guitar pedal switch," which helps them control audio and strobe light effects. ![]() The "scare actors" who are part of the mazes are often working with more technology than is at first apparent. ![]() Often, they purposely make it seem as though you are being splattered by blood – but don't worry, as Murdy said it was just distilled water, even as he humorously noted that they inevitably get people complaining that they were sprayed with something that might actually have stained their clothing… or perhaps real blood. Murdy noted that while their actors can't touch anyone, "We like to physically affect our guests," noting, "We use all sorts of different things to psychologically prey on our guess, because it's all about how scary these attractions are." He explained that includes our sense of smell, which is why in the Friday maze, you'll smell everything from the scent of pine in the Camp Crystal Lake setting/entrance, to the smell of burning flesh to accompany the visual of a girl being roasted over a fire, just as one of the victims was in the film. Murdy walked us through the Friday maze, which was still not completely assembled - we were a couple of weeks away from opening day - but still had plenty of details to admire or recoil from, depending on your tastes. This year's maze is specifically based on the 2009 remake of the film, which Murdy said excited them because that film changed Jason's look and attitude – meaning they could take a new approach with him in the maze, rather than repeat exactly what came before. While HHH has had a maze based on Friday before, it was influenced by the original film series. That is the case once again this year, and on a recent visit to Universal Studios Hollywood, Creative Director John Murdy gave a tour of one of the big mazes this year, Friday the 13th.
